The Hmong both celebrate during the same time, usually in mid- November. But we wanted to find out what makes each of these events unique. Why do some people prefer the larger gatherings, such as the one in Lansing, MI? Why do some enjoy a smaller celebration, as the one in Akron?

What really happens off-stage at these festivals and which one would you want to go to --if you've never been to a Hmong New Year festival; or if you have been, does it hold true to the traditional festivals that were celebrating in China and Laos or Thailand by our ancestors and our parents?

Without the controversy, glamour, and politics invovled in these types of current events, we got personal with the members of the community and recorded our findings in a very documentari-esque manner.

Although this is one article in its entirety, we've made it obvious by distinguishing the two locations with the use of black and white in our background spreads. Once you read the stories, you'll be able to relate to the places as we did and maybe you'll understand why we chose these two colors.
