该书是第一部从“跨国”的角度对苗族(HMONG人)进行专题研究的著作。这项研究得到国家社会科学基金资助,项目名称为“跨国界的苗族与亚太国际社会研究”(批准号96CMZ006)。
苗族(HMONG人)是一个起源于中国,并在中国、东南亚、欧美等地区十几个国家跨国而居的少数族群,因其独特的历史源流、社会文化及其对所居国家的影响,而在族群理论研究方面具有典型意义。作者梳理分析了大量的中外文献资料,并结合田野调查,运用跨学科的理论和知识,对苗族(HMONG人)的跨国性进行了多侧面的探讨。这项成果突破了苗族研究的传统范式,在苗学研究领域具有开拓性。作者还通过对该族群的具体研究,展开理论分析,对跨国族群理论、族群与国家关系理论、中国少数民族境外迁徙与移民等问题进行了具有创新意义的思考和研究。
我国有不少民族属于跨国族群,它们在国家的社会生活和对外关系中起着重要作用;从世界范围看,一些跨国族群问题经常成为国际社会和学术界关注的热点。因而,该项研究成果的出版具有重要的现实意义。

Abstract
From a perspective of transnationality, this work is a creative one in the field of Miao Studies which based on the program financed by the National Fund for Social Science of China.
Although originating in China, the Miao (Hmong) people is a transnational (and cross-border) ethnic group who today live in more than ten countries, such as China, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand of Asia, USA and Canada of America, France of Europe, and so on. The study of Miao is typically significant to the ethnicity theory due to their unique historical background, culture, and their impact on the countries they live. On basis of rich documentary materials in Chinese and English and the field work, the research focuses on the ethnic transnationality of Miao from several aspects. The study here is original to Miao studies, as it makes a breakthrough to the traditional academic paradigm of this field. Further more, abstracting from the facts of the studies on this group, the author makes significant discussions on the theories of transnational ethnic groups, relation between ethnicity and nationality, migration overseas of minorities of China.
The transnationality of ethnic groups plays an important role both in the countries they live and in the relationship between countries concerned. The issues of transnational ethnic groups are often the highlight attracting attentions of international community and academic circle. So the publication of the book would provide valuable views on the issues.
