Nicholas Tapp,国外著名的Hmong人(苗族)研究学者、人类学家。英国人,1986年在伦敦大学东方与非洲研究学院获哲学博士学位。曾在香港中文大学人类学系任教职,期间与乔健教授合编了在中国族群领域颇有影响的论文集《中国的族性与族群》(Ethnicity & ethnic groups in China)(1989)。现为澳大利亚国立大学人类学系高级研究员。
最初,他基于在泰国Hmong人地区的田野研究,完成了博士论文《佛教与Hmong人:社会调适的一个个案研究》(Buddhism and the Hmong: a case study in social adjustment)(1986),不久后又出版了《主权与起义:泰国北部的白苗(white Hmong)》(1989)一书,影响很大,从此在国际人类学界崭露头角。该书出版后,他马上开始了对中国Hmong人的调查研究。1989-1991年期间,他在四川南部、贵州和云南的Hmong人地区开展田野调查。在此基础上,他出版了《西南中国的部落民》(The Tribal peoples of southwest China:Chinese views of the other within)(2000)、《中国Hmong人:情境、能动性与想像性》(The Hmong of China: Context, Agency, and the imaginary)(2001)。
自从获博士学位以来,他在相关学术界十分活跃,成果丰硕,影响广泛。目前,他正在从事的研究项目是“亚洲海外移民回归故乡的影响”,其调查研究涉及到中国、泰国、老挝、澳大利亚,今后可能还包括法国和美国的Hmong人社区。
